The OCC welcomes photographer Sean Pollock

About Sean:

I started taking photos in 2009 and shot a variety of subjects ultimately landing on portraits as what I enjoy the most. The last few years I’ve shot content for social media bloggers, LCBO, Lululemon and Lonely Planet. I worked at 500px managing files for stock photo sales as well as hiring and managing photographers. Now I am a freelance photographer shooting lifestyle content and weddings.

Presentation Summary

I’ll be presenting on the stock photo industry and why non-traditional custom stock photos are beginning to succeed.

We are very lucky to get Maia Sutnik, Curator Emeritus Photography, at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO). We're going deep into photographic history with two European photographers, Josef Sudek and Alfred Eisenstaedt

The artistry of two legendary photographers explore the themes of commonality and intimacy. Throughout their long photographic careers, both photographers demonstrated craftsmanship, technical virtuosity, and imagination that was often unparalleled among their contemporaries. Sudek (Czech, 1896-1976) was grounded in his homeland and pursued a world of light and meditation; Eisenstaedt (West Prussia-Germany, 1898 - USA 1995), traveled widely and with great speed to capture the newsworthy.

Maia-Mari Sutnik is Curator Emeritus Photography, at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO). Since starting to develop the collection of photographs at AGO in 1978, she has organized and or curated over seventy exhibitions on the work of; Robert Frank, Bill Brandt, Harry Callahan, John Gutmann, E. Haanel Cassidy, Charles Macnamara with M.O. Hammond, Michel Lambeth, Willliam Wegman, Andre Kertesz, Josef Sudek, Ansel Adams and Alfred Eisenstaedt, as well as, a wide range of thematic exhibitions, among them “Eros & Thanatos”, “Interior Spaces”, and “Responding to Photography: Toronto Private Collections”. Her recent major exhibition and corresponding book, “Memory Unearthed: The Lodz Ghetto Photographs of Henry Ross”, exhibited at the AGO and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, will be touring in USA. She has authored many catalogues, written extensively on photographic collecting and practices, participated on juries, panel discussions and lectured. She is an affiliated of Ryerson University’s Master Program on Photographic Preservation and Collections Management, and currently working on a book on Canadian photographer Michel Lambeth.

The Oakville Camera Club Welcomes Larry Nicols to talk about people, architecture and travel photography and building a business around that.

In his own words:

Photography for me is all about the aesthetic. I like to create beautiful images. And I find beauty everywhere, especially in the imprint of life on people’s faces and on the landscape. I tell stories through my pictures. I especially love the nuances of black and white imagery. So much narrative is told in the gray areas.

My commercial work is clean and precise, like plain language. My artistic work is personal, whimsical and subtle. It makes space for the viewer to find subtext and meaning in ways that move and engage. That’s the real power of photography.

I have solid classical technique. I started taking pictures on a Kodak Brownie when I was eleven. I got my hands wet pulling light-sensitive paper through a series of chemical baths. The magic of watching an image appear has never failed to amaze me.

My classical background was a perfect launch pad into the digital age of photography. I not only embraced the technology wholeheartedly but led the charge on it. I find digital photography liberating, crazy creative and perfect for someone like me who seeks and appreciates the beauty in life.

Nine Locations -Three Photographers - One India,

Bernie Cook, Juan Gil Niehorster and Gary van Eijk take you on a journey through Northern India as it is seen through, not one, but Three lenses.

As we take you on our adventure through the Himalayas and the Kashmir region of Northern India, you will see the people and places of India’s northern most Nubra valley, located near the Pakistan-India border, then to Pangong Lake on the border of China, to the Monasteries of Ladakh and Leh, into the green valleys of Manali, the Buddhist surroundings of Dharmshala, a journey within the holiest of Sikh places, the Golden Temple of Amritsar - the abode of God and finally on a spice quest into markets of Old Delhi.

Join us and learn as we review the best way to travel into remote India through our experiences, our equipment and our individual photography styles and through every unexpected turn that remote India travel took us….after all “nothing can prepare you for India" - but we will try!

We're very pleased to welcome Navy Nhum to present on Portrait Photography

In her words:

About

Not everyone gets my name right on the first attempt but it always makes me smile watching people try. Just in case you were wondering, it’s pronounced Na-vee Newm :)

My goals are simple, capture those real moments, the raw energy and most importantly, the story. To me, these are what make an image mean something and preserve more than just a moment in time. I’m not going to tell you how much I love photography or show a picture of me posing and smiling with a camera because well, no one wants to see another one of those. All I’ll say is that I love travelling, using the right side of my brain, and creativity is what keeps me sane. I also love the Rubik’s cube and really wouldn’t mind spending an afternoon just hanging out by the ocean solving it.

Join the OCC as we welcome Club and Board member Jared Fein and his presentation on photomicroscopy.

There is so much in our immediate world that our eyes cannot see, but which can be revealed  and captured through photomicroscopy.

By mounting a camera on a microscope, this amazing unseen world can provide countless opportunities to capture stunning images of things we mortals could otherwise not imagine.

Tonight’s presentation will provide an introduction and overview of this area of photography, in which Jared will share a number of his images ranging from living microorganisms to other interesting everyday objects, then will dazzle you all with some of the best award winning photomicrographs from Nikon’s annual Small World photography competition.
